City by the Bay in 1 Day - San Francisco Itinerary

City by the Bay in 1 Day - San Francisco Itinerary

San Francisco is a city of high-tech and startups, hippy restaurants and fun little neighborhoods, each with their unique spin. But...you only have a day, so what to do?

 GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

Probably one of the more obvious things to do when in San Francisco, is to get a glimpse or even walk along the Golden Gate Bridge.  The $35 million dollar cable-suspension design makes it certainly one of the most photographed bridges in the world and definitely a must-see. I'd recommend heading down over to the Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point for some up-close views of this iron giant.

FISHERMAN'S WHARF & PIER 39

Stop by and say Hello to the Sea Lions at Pier 39 (a riot of color, sound, and smells). Then take a stroll down Fisherman's wharf for some fresh seafood or clam chowder and possibly some shopping for fun and tacky gifts to bring home.

LOMBARD STREET

Take the challenge and walk down Lombard Street (also known as the most crooked street in the world), or be lazy like me and drive down it. This steep, hilly, street goes one way (down) past a bevy of gorgeous Victorian mansions.

PAINTED LADIES

Head on over to Alamo Square Park where a collection of colourful Victorian and Edwardian style houses known as the Painted Ladies of San Fran are lined up ready for their post-card worthy shot. This vibrant row of homes and their fascinating roots in San Franciscan history have definitely earned their place in American architecture and have made it one of the top tourist attractions in San Fran.

If You've Got the Time....

Now your day is probably coming to an end but if you have some time to squeeze in a few more activities during your short visit in San Fran, I'd recommend checking out ChinatownAlcatraz Island and/or Muirwoods National Park Monument

Pro Tip:  If you want to get a peak of Alcatraz, the Alcatraz island tickets and tours book up FAST during high season, so be prepared and book at least 90 days in advance. Also, if you plan on driving to see the Muirwoods National Park, you'll need to reserve your parking spot at least a day before.

Transportation

UBER EVERYWHERE. Just kidding, that gets expensive.

San Francisco is infamous for its cable cars so definitely ride one if you get the chance! Fare is $7 for a single ride, and stops at popular areas like Market StreetFisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, the Financial District and Ghiradelli Square

Stay

Since you are staying in San Fran for a day and probably don't want to waste any time dealing with traffic or scavenging for parking spots, I'd recommend staying in Union Square, where all the action is. The Hilton Union Square San Francisco Hotel is conveniently located right in the heart of Union Square, and walking distance from the Cable Car routes and approx a mile from Nob Hill and Chinatown.

EAT

Chances are that when you're in San Fran you'll probably come across a tonne of highly rated restaurants, which can make choosing where to eat quite the challenge (in the best way possible!) To help you out a little, here are a few of my personal favourite SF resaturant recommendations.

Lunch Bowls and Afternoon Drinks - Palm House

Fresh Seafood and Award winning Clam Chowder - Pier Market

Quick Breakfast and Coffee - Blue Bottle Coffee
